What our customers say
Saved A Cruise To Iceland
“I’d been having problems getting travel insurance because I was awaiting the results of tests. AllClear were extremely helpful and took their time listening to me. They went through my medical history, and covered everything, except the awaiting result of a CT scan. This was at a fair price for me to go on a cruise to Iceland this week. I can’t thank them enough.” Mr Richards, Date of experience: 21 March 2023

Frequently asked questions
Is Iceland in Europe for Travel Insurance?
Yes, Iceland is part of Europe for Travel Insurance. It’s included in our European Travel Insurance policies. When planning a trip to Iceland, you should check the specific details of your travel insurance policy. Make sure it provides adequate coverage for your needs during your visit.
Do you need Travel Insurance for Iceland?
Travel insurance is not legally required for visiting Iceland. However, it’s strongly recommended for several reasons:
- Medical coverage. Iceland has a high-quality healthcare system. But, medical treatment can be expensive. The UK Government advises the GHIC to cover any emergency medical costs. However, this doesn’t cover transport costs to or from hospital. It also doesn’t cover medical repatriation if you must fly home for treatment.
- Adventure activities. Glacier hikes. Volcanic explorations. Iceland offers many adventurous activities. These carry risks. Comprehensive Travel Insurance provides peace of mind by covering injuries.
- Protection from unforeseen events. Travel insurance covers trip delays, lost baggage, and emergency evacuations. These can be useful given Iceland’s unpredictable weather.
Does the GHIC cover Iceland?
Yes, the GHIC now covers Iceland. However, the UK Government advises that the GHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. When travelling to Iceland, you should also have the appropriate Travel Insurance that covers medical treatment and repatriation
What should you do if you're injured or ill while in Iceland?
If you’re injured or ill while in Iceland, here are the key steps you should take:
- For emergencies, dial 112. This is the emergency number for police, fire department, and ambulance services in Iceland. It’s free to call and works even if your phone doesn’t have service in Iceland.
- Do you have a serious illness or injury that needs attention? But you don’t need an ambulance?
- Go to the Emergency Room (Bráðamóttaka) at Landsspítali in Fossvogur. No appointment is needed.
- For minor illnesses or injuries, visit a Primary Health Care Centre (open from 8 am to 4 pm in most areas). These are suitable for issues you’d see a GP for.
- Always carry your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC – previously EHIC). This allows access to state-provided healthcare at a reduced cost. Or sometimes for free.
- Ensure a healthcare provider in the state system treats you. Private healthcare is not covered by the EHIC/GHIC.
- If you need medication, visit a pharmacy (apótek). They accept cash and cards and are usually open from 10 am to 6 pm.
- If you need medical treatment, contact your travel insurance provider as soon as possible. They can advise you on coverage and may need to arrange payments for more extensive treatments. You can contact the British Embassy in Reykjavik for any support or guidance.
Iceland has high-quality medical care, but services may be limited outside larger urban areas. When visiting Iceland, it’s advisable to have comprehensive Travel Insurance in addition to your GHIC.
